Peru, Asociacion de Mujeres Desplazadas, Hunacayo

Most of the women involved in the Association are originally from the rural communities of Huancavelica, Ayacucho and the High Andean regions of the Valley of Mataro-Junin. They were displaced from their villages by terrorism and sought refuge on the fringes of Huancayo. In 1994 the Association was formed. Its name, "Ucc Warmy Jinalla Sayarisum" means "As Women United, We Rise Up". There are 136 women in nine different groups, each of which specializes in different forms of craft. For example, the Santa Rosa group makes the attractive and colourful hairbands and hairslides which we sell and the Laive group makes the earrings.
Micro credit is available to assist some of the women establish small businesses and they are also offered the opportunity to learn financial management.

Huancayo is the capital city of Junin [One of the non-federalised states of Peru]. It is best known for its Sunday markets, richly varied in local crafts and wares. Commerce in the region consists of produce, cattle, foodstuffs and products from the chemical, wood, ceramics and textile industries.
