Peru, Agustina Rivas Women's Support Centre

The Agustina Rivas Centre in Lima Peru has been in existence for ten years. It serves poor women who are working in the sex industry and who confront many problems. The aim of the Centre is to develop the women's self confidence, health, education and skills.
The problems faced by the women include:
- How to negotiate health issues for themselves and the members of their families. Poor health is mostly due to poor nutrition.
- •How to deal with social stigmatisation and consequent lack of opportunities in the areas of education and formation of core values.
•Through the experience of working with the women in the Centre, Good Shepherd workers have become conscious of the importance of timely intervention to lead them in the discovery of their potential abilities and the proper appreciation of their capabilities. It is very important to support them in their desire to continue their education and for this, work is offered at the Centre as incentive. They have produced many items based on their previous knowledge acquired outside of the centre and subsequently improved within the centre. Particularly successful have been the hand-crafted cards, blankets and articles for the home.
