Philippines, Good Shepherd Drop-In Centre, Cebu

For very poor young women in northern Mindanao in the Philippines, the prospect of jobs in Cebu is very attractive. They are lured from their villages by recruiters promising good jobs that will enable them to support their families back home and assist their siblings to get an education. However, when they reach Cebu they are brought directly to "casas" or brothels. Many of them are still minors, which makes them more attractive to some customers who pay higher prices for women who are virgins. The young women are geneally referred to the Drop-In Centre by NGO's in the area. The Centre offers them a safe and non-judgemental place where they can relax, receive a meal and, for those who wish, learn new skills that may enable them to leave the sex trade. The Conference name tags made by the women are very attractive. The beaded section can be detached from the tags and used a necklace. Through the sale of these conference name tags the women hope to build a new and better future for themselves and their families.
